If I had to pick one euphemism to sum up 2024, it would be “in like a lion, out like a lamb.” It’s been a year of firsts—a year of stepping out of my comfort zone, facing unexpected obstacles, and learning lessons the hard way. I launched a new brand and rolled out a new business model. The team grew and so did the number of nonprofits we serve. We also stuck our necks out a little bit further to help our clients in new ways. I have the best team; they’re adaptable and bursting at the seams with talent. They are the not-so-secret sauce to our company’s success. Another key ingredient that I feel immense gratitude for are my coaches, mentors, and confidants who provide me with constant encouragement and support.
This year, I found myself stepping into new roles and responsibilities in ways I hadn’t expected. Whether it was taking on bigger projects, learning the importance of outsourcing payroll, or navigating the complexities of insurances and bonds, every experience pushed me to grow. One of the hardest lessons I faced was handling my first employee departure. It wasn’t just the logistics of managing a transition; it was the emotional weight of the responsibility I felt for that person’s growth and their decision to leave. It was a tough moment, but it also brought so many valuable learning opportunities—about leadership, empathy, communication, and resilience. It was a trial by fire, but I came out of it with a new perspective, a deeper understanding of my leadership style, and a renewed commitment to the growth and well-being of those around me.
Through it all, I turned to my team and a mighty network of amazing leaders who cheered me on from the sidelines over wine, coffee, and calls. The other day, I glanced at my phone right around quitting-time to find an unexpected text from my colleague-turned-mentor. She set me on my professional path four years ago, practically opening the door for me to walk through. I owe her everything. The text read, “I just want to tell you I’m grateful for you and what you put in the world.” These words proved a balm for a weary heart. I don’t think I can fully articulate what it’s meant to have people who have walked the road before me and are willing to offer their wisdom, support, and encouragement. They’ve helped me navigate the highs and lows of entrepreneurship, and they’ve done so with compassion, honesty, and a sense of humor that has made all the difference. These mentors have become my North Star, reminding me that while the journey can be tough, it’s always worth it.
And that’s where the beauty of mentorship comes full circle. I’ve been fortunate enough to be supported by incredible leaders who helped me navigate this topsy-turvy journey with grace, and now, as I move forward, I’m beginning to see how I can be that same support for others. After kicking around the idea for months, a colleague and I decided to launch a resource group for entrepreneurs to meet, swap tales, and support each other. I’ve been approached by two of the most incredible women I know to serve as a mentor to them as they grow their own businesses, and I accepted—with the disclaimer that I still have my own management coach. I’ve made it my mission to cultivate relationships with my friends and colleagues where they feel comfortable asking vulnerable questions.
I’m excited about the opportunities to pass on the lessons I’ve learned. Whether it’s offering guidance to my team members, supporting a colleague through a difficult decision, or mentoring an aspiring leader, I feel ready to give back in the same way that so many have given to me. To be able to offer others the kind of mentorship and support that has shaped my journey is both an honor and a responsibility I take seriously.
I’ve learned so much about the importance of patience, perseverance, and adaptability. It’s shown me that growth often happens in the most unexpected ways. There are no shortcuts, and there is no perfect path—there is only the willingness to learn, the courage to fail, and the openness to receive and offer support along the way. I’m deeply grateful for the mentors who have paved the way for me, for the team members and collaborators who have joined me on this journey, and for the many lessons that have come through trial and error. I am thankful for the privilege of being able to build something meaningful to support the nonprofit sector and for the chance to continue evolving as both a leader and a human being.
As I continue to learn, grow, and adapt, I’m more committed than ever to creating a space where others can do the same. I know there will be more challenges ahead, more lessons to learn, and more firsts to experience. But I also know that I am not walking this path alone. I’m surrounded by an incredible community of mentors, colleagues, and changemakers who inspire me every day.
Here’s to the next chapter—whatever it may bring! And to the privilege of learning, growing, and supporting others along the way. I am beyond grateful for this journey, and I look forward to all the good it will continue to bring.
With gratitude and excitement for the future,
Heather
